Extend Your Computer’s Longevity To Save More

I can vividly recall when my MacBook’s motherboard crashed. It was just like yesterday. I have to admit that it was entirely my fault as I spilled a decent amount of hot beverage on it. The situation is bad as the motherboard holds many crucial components together such as the CPU and the memory.

To my horror, the damage took me back by S$500. This amount is almost half the price of a brand new iPhone 7. It was too much! This faux pas was a buzzing reality check for me. I needed to take care of my devices for many years to come.

Keeping your laptop or computer working is vital for your sanity, productivity, and budget. So, consider these tips:

BLOCK THE NASTY BUGS

Upon opening the fresh boxes of your laptop or computer, one of your top priorities is to install an anti-virus application. An adequately protected device will prevent the corruption of personal data and other important files. Furthermore, it will give you a smooth functioning operating system. Worry not about shelling tons of cash as you can download free applications such as Avast and AVG 2017.

DECLUTTER YOUR SPACE

Aside from the viruses and malware attacks, too much clutter can slow down the operation system. A quick way to clean your space is to transfer your bulky files into an external hard-drive or hard disk. A 1 TB portable disk can cost you about S$80 at Lazada Singapore and S$89 at Courts Singapore.

The more space you have, the better your device will run.

CLEANSE YOUR KEYS

A filthy keyboard is not only a health hazard, but it can also damage your keyboard completely. Make it a habit to sanitize your keyboard and track pad.

Cleanse your keys by turning it upside down to release any loose materials. Then, blow into it to remove any debris between the keys. The last step is to dip a cotton swab into rubbing alcohol and wipe your keys and track pad gently.

STRENGTHEN THE BATTERY

The battery is an essential part of any device. Take care of your computer or laptop’s battery by draining it at least once a month. Afterwards, you must allow it to have a full cycle before you use it again. For laptop users, unplug it and rely on the “stored battery life” to keep it working.

The act of draining and recharging helps to maximize its performance. When battery replacement is necessary, look for lithium ion (Li-Ion) batteries as they have the greatest longevity.

When Is It Okay To Sacrifice A Bigger Paycheck?

Congratulations! You have been offered the position that you have been pining for. During your final interview, you realized that the starting salary is less than what you expected. It is completely normal to feel disappointed at first. But, you must not dismiss a job offer because of the relatively lower paycheck.

Do not get me wrong! I am not advocating the acceptance of an utterly ridiculous offer. All that I am sayings is that there are some scenarios where a lower paying position can pay off in the long run. Here are just some of them:

#1: WHEN THERE ARE OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW

Just because your current position pays lower than expected, does not mean that you are going to be stuck in a low paying role for a lifetime. A low paying position may be used as a stepping stone for something much brighter. For instance, many bank employees agree to contract roles for a chance to be converted into permanent staff.

Other institutions provide opportunities to jump to different departments as they do not want their employees to be stagnant. Alternatively, you may use your acquired skills and experience as a leverage for the next company that you will apply for. You can get paid more as an “experienced” candidate.

#2: WHEN YOU WANT A CREDIT BOOST

there are two ways to boost your credibility without having to accept a bigger paycheck. One way is to apply for a recognized company and the other is to take on an impressive job title. Let us start with the former.

Notice how employable a person is when he or she comes from a multinational corporation such as Microsoft, Adidas, and Kia Motors. It is usually a good idea to accept a relatively lower pay to reap the benefits of a company name in your CV. But, be sure to move on to the next company when the right time comes.

The latter involves a flashy new title. Say you have been a sales associate for several years. Becoming an administrative officer for the same company seems like a breathe of fresh air. Although you will get paid similarly (or even less), you prefer a new title to gain more respect within the company. To other people, this compensation is enough.

#3: WHEN YOU ARE MAKING A CAREER SHIFT

A friend of mine has been in the retail industry since she graduated from a local university. In her early 30’s, she began to seek fulfillment beyond raising a brand’s sales. She became a preschool teacher. The starting pay was lower than what she expected, but she accepted it. You see, one of the major reasons why employees settle for less pay is because they are switching into different industries.

As the founder of an HR company called T.R. Ellis Group once said: “It’s unreasonable to expect to receive top dollar when you move into a role where you have little to no experience.” Think about the training expenses the company has to shell out just to broaden your skill set!

#4: WHEN THE BENEFITS ARE BETTER

I will let you join my trip down the memory lane. My first job did not include dental or medical benefits. I had to tap into my savings whenever I get sick just to get a medical certificate from the family doctor. To my delight, all these benefits were wrapped around the bow of my succeeding positions.

Perhaps you have to sacrifice a bigger paycheck for a job that covers your graduate studies or your travel expenses (e.g., flying overseas once a month). Workplace benefits may not appear as cash sometimes. This is why you have to look at the entire picture.

Delicious And Affordable Dishes From Themed Eateries In Singapore

Did you know edible helium balloons ever existed in Singapore? Well, it does! It exists along with other unique dishes offered at themed restaurants and cafes. Themed eateries usually go above and beyond the average dining experience.

If you are looking for something that steps outside of the box, keep your self entertained at these four establishments:

THE FIRST OF ITS KIND

In most situations, we bring more importance to the first and recent thing that we encountered. This is called the Primacy and Recency Effect. Let us pump up the accelerator on the Primacy Effect as we dive into a pioneering cafe, which showcased a massive collection of board games in Singapore. This cafe is none other than the Settler’s Cafe.

Settler’s Cafe has a collection spanning across its 14 years of existence. From trendy games such as the Game of Thrones Monopoly to the classic games such as Cluedo, you can always find something to suit your preferences.

What’s more? You can enjoy an hour of competitive game without having to break the bank! Go for the Chicken Chop (about S$9.90) or the Dory Pasta Spaghetti (about S$10.90).

Location: 39 North Canal Road, Singapore 059295

I’LL BE THERE FOR YOU

As a certified television enthusiast, there are some shows that I can watch over and over again. One of my all-time favorite sitcoms is F.R.I.E.N.D.S. To my delight, founder Lim Jit Min has curated a cafe focusing on the wonders of the said show. The loyal following of this sitcom was highlighted as the cafe was made possible by crowdfunding.

Relive its hit set by taking a trip into the Central Perk Singapore. The interior of the cafe has been intricately designed to recreate the overall vibe of the show. Aside from its hip interior, Central Perk Singapore shines due to the quality of the food and beverages. A proof of that is the recently introduced “Edible Helium Balloons“.

The average price of a complete course can cost you about S$50. Nonetheless, Mrs. Braverman’s Cheesecake (S$12) is the pocket-friendly dish that you must try!

Location: 01-01 Central Mall, 1 Magazine Road Singapore 059567

JOURNEY INTO THE WOODS

Take an aesthetically pleasing journey into the forest as you enter the wooden door of Windowsill Café. When I say forest, I am referring to a couple of trees in the corner and wooden furniture. Not to mention, there is a teddy bear in the middle of the place. Take these all in!

The brains behind Windowsill are two brothers named Jonathan and Sean Gwee. Food has been their longstanding passion as they operated some food stalls from Pandan Valley to Takashimaya. Their pies and tarts are crafted in the finest manner with each one being sold at approximately S$8 per slice. Do not skip on the highly-recommended flavors such as S’mores and Banana Cognac!

Location: 95 Soo Chow Walk, Singapore 575382

FALL DOWN A RABBIT HOLE

As a curious child, one of the several tales that I gravitate towards was Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”. I guess the owners of the Hatter Street felt the same way too. This whimsical and bright cafe centers on all things related to the “Wonderland”. The walls were decorated with large stickers of creatures having tea or huge teapots. This is clearly a reference to Mad Hatter’s tea party.

For people who are fond of the flavor Cookies and Cream, you will enjoy the Oh My Tian Brownie (S$7.50) which playfully fuses a generous scoop of ice cream and a soft brownie. Talk about the goodness that hot and cold can bring.

How To Efficiently Declutter Your Personal And Financial Life

The perfect time to organize your thoughts, to arrange your bills, and to declutter your home is NOW! Here are five strategies that you can start with:

CLEANSE YOUR PHONE

We are constantly glued to our devices. I do not mean to be a bearer of bad news, but your devices are not entirely sanitary. Various researchers have found Escherichia coli bacteria, Streptococcus, and other pathogens living on mobile phones. It is important to employ measures to keep yourself healthy and to minimize medical bills.

One of the first few things that I do upon coming home from work is to cleanse my phone. I grab a couple of cotton pads and spray it with Isopropyl Alcohol. This helps me disinfect my phone as I am constantly in contact with relatively sickly children. You can adopt this habit too!

FLOSS YOUR PEARLY WHITES

Many experts encourage the importance of flossing in one’s daily grooming routine. A floss is designed to reach between the gums and the teeth. It acts as an efficient tool to lower the risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and periodontal disease.

You do not want to go to a job interview with a flaming bad breath!

PURGE YOUR ITEMS

Are you getting trapped under a mountain of rubbish? Tidy your space by practicing the one-item-in and one-item-out policy. This policy works by bringing a new item in and dropping an old item out. You can either donate, sell, or throw the old item. Doing this regularly will improve both your financial and mental health.

ORGANIZE YOUR BILLS

Never forget where you put the bills or when their due dates are by designating one place for them. You read that right! You have to decide whether you are going to file all your bills in a tangible box or in a computer folder.

Some bills arrive by electronic mail while some arrive by postal mail. Printed bills must be kept in a labeled box. While for virtual storage of bills, make scanned copies of those that arrive in the mail and put them into a labeled folder in your laptop.

EASE YOUR MIND

Create a healthy division between your work and personal life to lessen your stress. For instance, my co-worker does not respond to the client’s calls after 7 PM. You may do the same thing, if necessary. Another way to keep your mind at ease is by not checking your email before you go to sleep.

It is inevitable to spot a message that will your mind buzzing all throughout the night. Furthermore, it may make you anxious to go to work the next day. Do you want that to happen?

4 ways to get the most out of your online spending

The beauty of online spending is undeniable – sit comfortably on your couch, browse on online shopping sites, add to your cart and cash out. Then, wait a couple of days for your package to be sent to your doorstep. It’s pretty much like a present you give to yourself.

With such convenience, however, it’s easy to buy things on impulse. I’m sure we are not strangers to buying a shirt that did not fit, or only realising later that you could have gotten it at a cheaper price with a credit card discount or promo code.

Here are 4 tips for you if you are guilty of spending more than you should while online shopping.

  1. Do plenty of research and read reviews

Especially when it comes to clothing apparels and shoes, it would be helpful to research sufficiently before purchasing an item. For instance, a pair of Nike shoes may be cheaper if you buy it from a US-based website, international shipping inclusive, as compared to buying from local stores.

On top of that, do read the sizing guides and what other people are saying about a brand via reviews before making the purchase. They are likely to tell you if the sizing runs smaller or larger, so that you can avoid buying the wrong size and spending even more money to alter it.

  1. Avoid shipping fee

Most online shopping sites offer free shipping when you spend a certain amount. If you’re unable to make up to that amount, get some friends to buy from the same website, and combine your purchases so that you can leverage on the free shipping.

In the event that your friends are unable to help you, you may add random things to your cart so that you make up that amount. When your purchases arrive, simply return the things that you don’t want. However, this tip is only useful if the online merchant offers free returns!

  1. Look out for discount codes or third-party cashback websites.

Do a quick Google search for discount codes and third-party cashback websites before you click the “check out” button. Websites such as ShopBack offer discounts, promo codes and vouchers. The only gripe is that these rebates only apply to participating merchants.

  1. Take note of credit card discounts

Online merchants usually have partnering banks and credit card discounts, so do read the FAQ page before cashing out your purchases.

Whether you caught the travel bug or are simply itching to shop, relax in the comfort of your home and click away on online sites such as Agoda, Expedia, Lazada and ZALORA. Do look out for promo codes for your HSBC credit card and save up to 75% off with these participating merchants! Visit www.hsbc.com.sg/promo for more offers and details. Conditions apply.

Online and Overseas Rebate Campaign 2017 - Table
In addition, between 1 May to 30 June 2017, be the first 5,000 cardholders to spend a minimum of $1000 on your HSBC credit card and get up to 12% cash rebate on your online and overseas purchases, capped at $200 rebate per month – the more you spend, the more you save!

Furthermore, this offer applies to overseas merchants so you can get that pair of coveted Adidas Yeezys or Colorpop Cosmetics at a fraction of Singapore’s price.
