Get Your Free N95 & Surgical Masks Until September 26

On the first day of Temasek Foundation’s mask distribution exercise, more than 100,000 households have collected their free N95 respirator and medical grade surgical masks. These masks are standard adult size.

The collection spans from August 26 to September 26.

WHERE CAN YOU COLLECT?

Singapore residents can collect 25 pieces of N95 respirator masks and 50 pieces of medical grade surgical masks at 15 CapitaLand malls and selected Cold Storage, Sheng Siong, FairPrice Xtra, Prime Supermarket, and Giant outlets.

There is a total of 131 collection points throughout the country and some collection points have employed the digital queuing system. As a friendly reminder, not all supermarket outlets are considered as collection points. Check out the participating outlets at stayprepared.sg.

WHAT IS THE DIGITAL QUEUE SYSTEM?

Eleven out of fifteen CapitaLand malls have activated the digital queue system. You can be added to the queue at these selected malls: Bedok Mall, Bugis Junction, Bukit Panjang Plaza, Funan, IMM, JCube, Junction 8, Lot One, Plaza Singapura, Tampines Mall, and Westgate. With this system in place, you do not need to stand in line to wait. Simply read the notification that alerts you to collect your masks. You can also check the length of queue through the system. Signing up for the digital queue will allow you to catch up on your other errands.

Go to getq.capitaland.com to snag an online queue number and to get notified on your phone when it is your turn to collect.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING?

You need to bring two important things when you are about to collect your free masks. Firstly, please have your SP Group bill (i.e., digital, or physical copy) ready or provide your residential account number at the collection point. Secondly, you must bring a sturdy bag. This bag needs to be big enough to carry up to three boxes of masks. No bags will be provided at the collection point.

WHY ARE THEY GIVING AWAY FREE MASKS?

Temasek Foundation aims to help the Singapore residents in their fight against COVID-19. It said this in an earlier statement: “It is important to have better masks ready for higher risk situations. For example, residents with flu symptoms should put on a better mask such as a medical-grade surgical mask to go see a doctor.”

The Foundation added that people who have tested positive for COVID-19 at home with an antigen rapid test kit should put-on higher-grade masks like an N95 respirator when going to the doctor for confirmatory COVID-19 tests.

Temasek Foundation Gets Ready For The Distribution Of Free Surgical & N95 Masks

Key Highlights

  • Temasek Foundation will soon provide free surgical and N95 masks to households in Singapore.
  • The Foundation is conducting trials before making it widely available.
  • Households will be able to claim the masks by presenting SP Group bills at various malls and supermarkets.

As new variants and cases emerge, Temasek Foundation is set to distribute free surgical and N95 masks by the end of August. Surgical masks and N95 respirators are examples of personal protective equipment that are used to shield the wearer from airborne particles and other liquid contaminating the face.

The Foundation recently clarified that there were no distribution exercises last August 4, despite the emergence of the banner advertising online. Temasek’s Chief Executive Ho Ching said in a Facebook post that the Foundation is working with CapitaLand malls and participating supermarkets to conduct trial exercises where masks will be distributed when people show their SP Group bills.

In these trial exercises, each household will be entitled to twenty-five pieces of N95 masks and fifty pieces of medical-grade surgical masks.

The mass distribution was intended to start after National Day, but it has since been postponed to the end of August. The distribution exercises could be pushed back to September, should there be any outstanding back-end issues that need to be resolved.

Nonetheless, household representatives are encouraged to reduce plastic waste by bringing their own bags to carry the boxes of masks when the collection begins.

CURBING THE SPREAD OF DELTA

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread across the world, public health officials are watching certain coronavirus variants and mutations that can be more contagious or fatal than the original strain. The Delta variant, also known as B.1.617.2, has been found to spread more easily.

As most of us know, the Delta variant is twice as contagious as the other variants that caused COVID-19 last year. This variant entails Singapore residents to wear more effective masks to help bring down the infection numbers.

Noting that each case has an infectivity rate of between five and six people, Ms. Ho Ching said that “80% of the population needs to wear 80% effective masks or better” to curb the spread of the virus. She added that N95 masks can be worn for high-risks jobs such as looking after COVID-19 patients.  The N95 respirator is a respiratory protective device designed to achieve a very close facial fit and an efficient filtration of airborne particles. The edges of this device are designed to form a seal around the mouth and the nose.

“With the medical grade surgical and N95 masks with effectiveness of 95% or better, we have an additional option for better protection.”

Furthermore, pharmacies will no longer be involved in the mask distribution exercises as these establishments do not have enough space to cater for it.

Each S’pore Household Will Get Free Oximeter From July 5

In part of Temasek Foundation’s Stay Prepared initiative, all households in Singapore will be eligible to collect a free oximeter. The efforts of the Temasek Foundation started due to the emergence of the more infectious COVID-19 variants.

According to Temasek Foundation, “silent pneumonia” is one of the most serious consequences of COVID-19. It occurs when seriously ill people feel generally well, despite having damaged lungs and dangerously low levels of oxygen.

It is important to note that COVID-19 can cause blood oxygen levels to drop. Although you feel okay, oxygen levels may drop. Prolonged low oxygen levels can damage your vital organs. Thus, giving oximeters to Singapore residents will allow them to monitor their blood oxygen levels regularly.

Stay Prepared leaflets with redemption tabs will be sent to letterboxes of every household from June 28 to July 3. You must take the leaflet (with the redemption tab) to any of the participating supermarket and pharmacy outlets of FairPrice, Sheng Siong, Cold Storage, Giant, Watsons, Unity, or Guardian to collect your oximeters from July 5 to August 5. Residents may also collect the oximeters on behalf of other family members or friends by bringing their leaflets along with the redemption tabs.

Check the nearest collection points at stayprepared.sg/oximeter. You can opt to collect during off-peak hours to avoid large crowds. Moreover, Temasek Foundation adds that “there is plenty of stock, so there is no need to rush”.

WHAT ARE OXIMETERS?

Pulse oximetry is a noninvasive method used for monitoring a person’s oxygen saturation. A pulse oximeter is a medical device that indirectly monitors the oxygen saturation of a patient’s blood as opposed to measuring oxygen saturation directly through a blood sample.

The normal range is 95% – 100%. While you are advised to seek medical attention if your result shows 90% – 94% or <90%. A result of <90% indicates that you are in urgent need of oxygen. Some people may have lower oxygen levels due to pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma.

ADVANTAGES OF OXIMETER

The regular usage of oximeter can help alert a person to seek medical attention when his or her oxygen levels become dangerously low. You do not need rigorous training to be able to use it!

Pulse oximetry is convenient for noninvasive continuous measurement of blood oxygen saturation. Its portable nature entails that you can assess yourself anytime and anywhere.

LIMITATIONS OF OXIMETER

Pulse oximetry is not a complete measure of respiratory sufficiency as it solely measures hemoglobin saturation. It is not a substitute for the blood gas test because it gives no indication of the carbon dioxide levels, base deficit, blood pH, or bicarbonate (HCO3−) concentration.

A blood gas test evaluates the lung function by measuring the blood pH, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. It also monitors the treatment for lung diseases and detects the acid-base imbalance in your blood.

Moreover, oximeter readings may be inaccurate if you are wearing nail polish or if you have trembling hands. World Health Organization Pulse Oximetry Training Manual adds that some people may normally have low oxygen levels (e.g., smokers or asthmatics).

HOW CAN YOU COLLECT ONE?

STEP 1: BRING YOUR STAY PREPARED LEAFLET

All residential households will receive the leaflet in their letterboxes by 3 July. Please ensure that the redemption tab is intact.

STEP 2: PRESENT THE LEAFLET TO THE STAFF AT THE COLLECTION POINT

Photocopies, digital copies, and redemption tabs without barcode fully intact will not be accepted.

STEP 3: STAFF WILL TEAR OFF THE REDEMPTION TAB

As proof of redemption, the staff will tear off and keep the redemption tab. If an oximeter is faulty, you can exchange your unit in its original condition at Temasek Shophouse (28 Orchard Road) between July 5 and Aug 31.
