Save Your Hard-Earned Cash! Avoid These 8 Money-Wasting Mistakes!

From harmful habits to wishful thinking, certain financial decisions can cost you a fortune. There is an endless list of things you should avoid doing with your hard-earned money. Here are eight things you should steer clear of:

#1: BUYING ITEMS FOR THE SAKE OF ITS NAME

I have to admit, I am guilty of buying products based solely on their brand names. Let’s face it: stores and generic brands are frequently disregarded when it comes to cost savings. Whether it’s food, skincare products, or over-the-counter medicine, your local grocery or drug store typically provides more affordable store brands or generic alternatives.

Pay attention to the labels, as the ingredients are often identical to those found in expensive brand-name products. Furthermore, when it comes to prescriptions, consider asking your pharmacist for the generic version. These medications work just as effectively as their brand-name counterparts and can save you a significant amount of money.

#2: PAYING LATE FEES

Do you know what quickly adds up and drains your finances? Paying for late fees. Whether it’s a late payment on your credit card, utility bill, or rent, these fees are best avoided. Set up automatic payments for all your bills to ensure that you never miss a payment again. This way, you won’t have to worry about forgetting to pay a bill on time.

If you do find yourself with a late fee, try calling the company and politely ask for it to be waived. Many companies are willing to accommodate their loyal customers by waiving late fees.

#3: PURCHASING PETROL STATION SNACKS

The occasional purchase of snacks at petrol stations may seem harmless, but it can quickly become a habit that drains your money. Those bottles of soda and bags of chips you pick up when filling up your tank or making a quick stop can add up over time. To manage this, create a rule for yourself to track all those small snack purchases, and set aside a small monthly allowance specifically for indulging in them. When running errands or encountering tempting locations filled with snacks, make it a habit to bring your own drinks and snacks.

#4: RENTING A BIGGER OFFICE SPACE

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the viability of working from home, resulting in excess office space and rising occupancy costs for businesses. Instead of maintaining large office spaces that cater to the entire workforce, it is worth considering the utilization of co-working spaces and digital collaboration tools. Singapore offers a variety of co-working spaces, including Crane, Workbuddy, and Gather Cowork, with multiple branches nationwide. By adopting this approach, you can continue working efficiently while significantly reducing expenses.

#5: CO-SIGNING A LOAN

Never co-sign a loan you can’t afford! Financial blogger Michelle Schroeder-Gardner strongly advises against co-signing a loan for someone unless you have the financial capacity to fully repay it yourself. There is always a risk that the other person may be unable to make the payments, which makes it crucial for you to protect yourself and your finances.

#6: DONATING OVER THE PHONE

I remember when a friend of mine shared a story about getting scammed over the phone. It happened right after she had finished a night shift, and she was feeling groggy and vulnerable. Phone solicitations can often involve legitimate fundraising efforts, but they also create an opportunity for scammers to exploit the goodwill of unsuspecting donors. To ensure your safety, never disclose your credit card number over the phone. Instead, request the solicitor to send you the information by mail. This way, you can thoroughly research the organization and verify its legitimacy before making any contributions.

#7: OVERSPENDING ON LOTTERY TICKETS

Did you know that tourists can play TOTO in Singapore? If you have a valid Foreign Identification Number (FIN) and meet all the prerequisites, you can play TOTO as a tourist. However, if you are solely a foreign passport holder, you will only be able to select and bet on Horse Racing. This can potentially lead to overspending on lottery tickets for foreigners. Keep in mind that the odds of winning the lottery are incredibly slim, with your chances of hitting the jackpot being roughly 1 in 292 million.

Despite the unfavorable odds, many people still spend a significant amount of money each month on lottery tickets. Instead of consistently allocating your funds to this improbable endeavor, it would be wise to redirect that money towards savings or your retirement plan. Investing in your long-term financial success through savings or retirement planning is a more prudent use of your resources.

#8: BUYING COFFEE CUPS

Some establishments take into account the cost of disposable cups when pricing their beverages. However, by opting for a reusable to-go cup, you can often enjoy a “discount” because you won’t be charged extra for the paper or coffee cup.

The entitled team member survival guide

two colleagues in an unhappy discussion

You know the type, right?

We’ve all got one in the office—that colleague who believes the rules don’t apply to them and they should be given special treatment.

That coworker who is full of excuses, the first to point fingers at others, and never takes responsibility for their actions.

Annoying.

And that’s why I’ve come up with this guide to help you… well, survive.

Recognize the signs

I’ve just named some of those recognizable signs for you right in the intro.

And if I may add—such entitled people always expect praise and rewards just for showing their faces.

They are also peeps with an inflated sense of self-importance, may even demand rewards before proving themselves, take extra time off whenever they want, or expect you to pick up the slack for them.

The entitled mindset can negatively impact team dynamics and productivity if left unchecked.

And that’s why you’ve got to…

Address the issue directly and privately

If you have an entitled coworker, the only way to deal with the situation is to address it directly.

Pull them aside for a private conversation, just the two of you.

Here are some conversation tips:

  • “I’ve noticed you seem to expect a special treatment that the rest of us don’t receive. I wanted to check if there’s a misunderstanding I’m unaware of.”
  • Explain specifically what behaviors are problematic and how they impact you and your teammates. For example, “When you refuse to take on basic tasks and insist that you’re capable of more, it means the rest of us have to pick up the slack.”
  • Share how their entitlement makes you and others feel. Say, “To be honest, your attitude comes across as disrespectful and hurts team morale.”
  • Be professional but firm, and don’t attack or make accusations. Focus on facts and your personal experience. Say, “I want us to have a constructive working relationship, but that won’t be possible unless we address this issue.”
Set clear expectations

To avoid entitlement issues on your team, establish clear expectations for everyone starting from day one.

  • Onboarding

When new hires report for work, this is an apt time to explain the team/company’s culture, values, and work standards. Be straightforward about goals, job requirements, and performance metrics. Document everything in black and white so everyone’s on the same page.

  • Have regular check-ins

Onboarding done right? Well done. But it’s not the end. Check-in regularly and discuss what’s going well and not so well. Provide constructive feedback and specific examples of how team members can improve. These ongoing conversations reinforce priorities and accountability. More on that in a bit.

  • Lead by example

When it comes to discipline, model the kind of behavior you want to see. Come prepared for meetings and meet your deadlines and targets. Your team members will follow your lead. If you make excuses or point fingers when things go wrong, you can’t expect others not to do the same. So practice what you preach, please.

Provide regular feedback

  • Schedule regular one-ones

Meet with that entitled team member regularly, whether weekly or biweekly. These one-on-one meetings are opportunities to provide feedback, clarify expectations, and address any issues. Come prepared with specific examples of their work and behavior. Explain how their actions impacted you, the team, clients, or company goals.

  • Give feedback there and then

If you notice an issue, address it promptly and privately. Pull them aside and have a quick chat about what you observed and how it could have been handled better. Give them a chance to respond and discuss. On-the-spot feedback is most effective since everything’s still fresh and open for immediate change in behavior or thinking.

  • Praise when praise is due

While feedback is essential, positive reinforcement also helps when they meet or exceed expectations. Praise them for their contributions and specific achievements. Show your appreciation and let them know you notice their efforts. Positivity and recognition can help motivate entitled individuals and make them more receptive to constructive criticism. They may come to value your feedback more if you balance it well.

Don’t give in to manipulation or emotional outbursts

And last but not least, stand firm in the face of manipulation or emotional displays.

Stay calm and composed. Do not engage or argue. Respond in a courteous, professional manner. Do not yell or insult them in return.

I wouldn’t suggest that you give in to their demands or requests just to “keep the peace.” This will only enforce their behavior and cause more issues down the road.

If necessary, get help from the management. Do not deal with harassment, bullying, or hostility on your own. Report the issues to HR or the head of your department and ask for assistance in addressing the problem.

You are there to do your job, not manage their emotions. So do not let their manipulation or outbursts derail you from your priorities and responsibilities.

So there you have it, a few survival tips to help you deal with that entitled coworker on your team. You have a job to do, and you’re not going to let their entitlement get in the way of that. Stay professional, focus on the work, and remember that their attitude says more about them than it does about you. With the right mindset, you can rise above their nonsense and not let that entitled team member get the better of you.

How to reduce air-conditioning bills in Singapore?

a living room with an air-conditioner

As the tropical heat of Singapore continues to challenge our daily comfort, air-conditioning has become more of a necessity than a luxury.

However, the soaring energy bills that accompany constant usage can be a rude awakening. And that’s why I’m here to help you strike a balance between staying cool and keeping costs down. Or at least try to offer my two cents.

Let’s discuss some practical tips and smart habits that can significantly reduce air-conditioning bills, ensuring you enjoy a cool and comfortable living space without breaking the bank.

Maintain your air-conditioner

First up on our simple hacks list is the need to maintain your air-con properly and regularly.

Even if it’s a tedious process, it’s one that you should not siam.

Clean and replace filters where necessary (depending on usage), and service the unit via a professional to make sure it’s running smoothly.

This will ensure that you use less energy and cool down your room/home faster.

Opt for energy-efficient models

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just remember—the more ticks, the better it is.

You should be able to find better energy-efficiency products with ease thanks to the tick rating system we have in Singapore.

In other words, if an appliance uses less energy to produce the same results as an appliance that uses more, it is said to be more energy efficient.

And that will have a direct impact on how much you pay for electricity at the end of the month.

It’s almost a no-brainer, right?

So don’t just be a cheapo and go for the lowest-priced one, be a smart shopper for longer-term gains.

Set the right temperature
a remote controller at 25 degrees

There’s no need to make your room feel like it’s winter in Antarctica, yeah.

The sweet spot should be around 24 to 25°C. Any lower than that and your bill will skyrocket like… a rocket. Every degree lower can add up to 10% more energy consumption.

Use a fan

If you really cannot tahan the heat without lowering the temperature, try using a fan to supplement. Or even better, use a ceiling fan.

Turning on the fan and the air-con together can help you set the aircon temperature higher. The fan will help to circulate the cool air and make you feel much better.

You don’t need to worry too much about the electricity bill because a fan uses waaay much less energy than the aircon. So, you can enjoy the cool air and save money at the same time.

How awesome is that?

Use a timer

Next, set the timer to turn off after a few hours, especially at night when you’re in deep slumber.

Some people like to leave the aircon on an entire day, and then wear a jacket or wrap themselves in a thick blanket because it’s too cold.

Why?!

You’re just saboing yourself financially.

Insulate your home
blinds on a window

You don’t need to hire someone to do it.

Just invest in some curtains, blinds, or window films. Block out the sun during the day, keep your home cooler, and reduce the need for air-conditioning at night.

And speaking of which, remember to also close your windows and doors. If your air-conditioner is turned on with an open window, you can’t blame anyone for those high bills.

Dress for the weather

People can die for fashion but I won’t sacrifice it for comfort.

I’m saying this because I used to have a friend who layers like he was going to the North Pole or what. He calls it the “layering fashion” and thinks it’s cool. Oh, well.

Anyhow, don’t be like him.

Choose lightweight items of clothing, like cotton or linen. They can help you stay cool and thus reduce the need to rely too much on your air-conditioning when you reach home from a warm day out.

Minimize heat-producing activities

When you cook or use appliances like an iron or a hair dryer, it makes your surrounding area hotter than your spouse’s temper.

The air-con works harder to cool down your house, so your bill goes up.

If feasible, turn on the air-conditioner after you’re done with all those appliances. It may sound like a “sis, you serious?!” moment but, hey, every little bit counts.

Install energy-efficient lighting

Those old-school bulbs are damn hot and can make your room feel even hotter than the weather outside.

But if you use LED bulbs, they generate less heat, and less power is needed also. Good, right?

Plus, LED bulbs can last longer, so you don’t need to keep changing them all the time.

Soaring air-con bills in Singapore really can make you want to pengsan. But don’t worry, follow the tips I’ve listed in this post to help you get by like a pro. To recap some points we’ve looked at: clean your aircon regularly. If there’s dust and dirt, the air-con must work harder to cool the room. Next, use a fan together with the air-conditioning. Not only will you be saving energy, but you will also instantly make the room feel cooler with the constant air circulation. Then, set the temperature to 25 degrees—no need to make the room feel like it’s winter. So there we have it, simple hacks for long-term gain 😉
